Still, all in all, this is one of the best novels in this series, and one that will keep you turning pages. But, that said, Davenport is a damned interesting guy. Most of the Prey novels are all about Davenport, all the time. Virgil Flowers also appears briefly, as brash and outlandish as ever, but only in a small way. Too brief, however, for a character who could enrich the story immensely if only she were given more play. There is a brief re-appearance by Elle Kruger, Davenport’s childhood friend who is now Sister Mary Joseph, who offers a psychological profile of the killer or killers. The family presence is reminiscent of how Sergeant Friday’s partner brings up his wife in inconsequential references, but never enough to humanize him beyond the facts, just the facts. They make infrequent and brief appearances throughout, but play no real part in his life or activities.
Will they? That’s part of the surprise.Īs usual, we encounter Davenport’s lovely wife Weather, their adopted daughter Letty, and a brief mention of their child together.
It is suspenseful and keeps you “preying” that the criminal or criminals get their just desserts.

I have enjoyed most of Prey series novel since I started reading them years ago, and I thoroughly enjoyed this one. Kidd’s beautiful wife, Lauren, is a woman with a past and a liking for larceny, and her loose cannon criminal shenanigans add a strange twist to this novel that threatens to blow the lid off of the whole mystery. In the process of investigating the case, Davenport calls on Kidd, in a narrative crossover that involves the protagonist from his lesser-known “Kidd” series of novels. Will it happen, or will the world of politics have added to its roster yet another highly placed, upwardly mobile and self-serving individual? In this case, we know early on who the miscreant is-which is a new kind of suspense as we turn the pages anxiously waiting for Davenport to eventually work out what we already know. In many previous Prey novels, we do not know who is behind the malfeasance leaving us to sleuth it out. He is suspected of having planted child pornography on the republican candidate’s computer, resulting in a highly-publicized scandal that threatens to ensure Taryn Grant the senate seat. Unusual in a politician, I know-but this is a work of fiction remember.Ī man named Tubbs disappears and is feared dead. The opposition candidate seems to have been framed in a political dirty trick. Lucas Davenport is investigating another case when the trail leads to the man's disappearance, then-very troublingly-to the Minneapolis Police Department, then- most troublingly of all - to a woman who could give Machiavelli lessons. When the car stops, a voice says, "Hey, I think he's breathing," and another voice says, "Yeah? Give me the bat." And that's the last thing he knows.
